Turtles are #1 Bestseller in Children’s Science & Nature!

Turtle House Press is proud to announce that WHY ARE TURTLES SO CRAZY AWESOME? is the #1 BESTSELLER in Children’s Science & Nature on Amazon.

To celebrate, we’re climbing a big pile of rocks!

IMG_0680Devil’s Marble Yard in southwestern Virginia is a big old pile of Antietam Quartzite. And by old, we mean over 500 million years. According to Roanoke Outside, “The boulder have tube-like structures running along them that are believed to be the fossilized cavities where worm-like creatures once lived.”

IMG_0647 Great views! They inspired my twins to make the heroic climb to the top so they could “do the dance” (which, to 10 year old boys, translates into an arm-waving, bum-shaking hilltop boogie).

Turtles Escape! It’s a Contest, People!

This just in from the Associated Press:  “More than 1,000 turtles made a slow-speed escape from their turtle farm in northwest Georgia.”

According to turtle farmer David Driver, vandals tore down fences in the Summerville, Georgia, turtle farm and the turtles were sprung… or, if “sprung” suggests too much speed, perhaps I should revise to say “leaked.”

The police are aiding Mr. Driver in his search. And since the article goes on to point out that a good many of the 1600+ turtle escapees are sold to China, it may not be such a bad idea for the little guys to lay low. (Or head up north to Virginia. I know someone with a big back yard who’s willing to share!)

As Summerville is the home of folk artist Howard Finster, I issue this challenge to my many followers:

Create a Turtle Escape and/or Turtles in Hiding image in the style of the late, great Howard Finster and email it to me at turtlehousepress@yahoo.com. I will post all entries on the website and a FABULOUS TURTLE-THEME PRIZE will be sent to the entry with the most panache!

Watermelon and Turtle! A Match Made in…Weirdness

Here’s a snazzy idea from (and I’m not making this up) The National Watermelon Promotion Board. Viola — the Watermelon Turtle!

Give the ladies at the neighborhood potluck something to talk about with this cute little guy.

Here’s how to do it!

What you need:

1 Oblong seedless watermelon
Knife
Melon baller or other scoop spoon
Channel knife (you can substitute with the top of a standard vegetable peeler)
Dry erase marker
2 Peppercorns, or other eye pieces
Fruit salad
Leaves, plants, or other accents as desired
Toothpicks or other skewers

Here’s what you do:

  1. Wash watermelon and pat dry.
  2. Cut in half lengthwise.
  3. Hollow out both sides, using a melon baller.
  4. Carve out block design in the bottom side, using a channel knife.
  5. Use a dry erase marker to trace turtle shell, legs, and head on top side of watermelon.
  6. Carve shapes with knife, and add designs with channel knife.
  7. Add peppercorns to the eye holes to fill.
  8. Fill bottom with fruit salad.
  9. Attach legs and head to shell, using strong toothpicks or skewers, and put on top of salad. Add accents around base with leaves and plants.
